Although could be seen as a niche market, honey industry and apiculture are of great importance to human beings and society, reaching 1.89 million tonnes of production worldwide by 2022, and a global market valued at €8,532 million, making this product of great economic importance nowadays, and also the first step on the agriculture and agrifood chains. This is due to apiculture’s impact on biodiversity and crops pollination. However, honey industry and apiculture are on a crisis today due to different factors, as economic sustainability threatened by external effects, and also bee’s population decrease.

Honey.AI project introduces a pioneer a digital solution for honey and apiculture sectors, by deploying an affordable AI-powered IoT solution for all kind of stakeholders (www.honey-ai.com). Honey.AI is an automated digital microscope that, based on robotics, computer vision and deep learning models, is able to autonomously perform many different quality analyses on honey samples, including fraud screening, and also bee’s infection diagnose. Honey.AI acts like an on-site one-stop-shop for the industry, and has been conceived to help honey stakeholders increase the control of their product, decrease adulteration within the market, reduce their dependence on external expensive laboratories, and start tracking some infections of the beehive at their premises. Honey.AI smart device allows them to carry out on their premises: pollen analysis (a very complex and expensive test), yeast concentration counting, colour measurement, starch detection, crystallization assessment, etc. Our project has a clear fit with the topic of the Open Call, as we are introducing a disruptive product within the agrifood sector, including deep tech solutions (computer vision, deep learning and IoT). With this project we aim to prepare the basis for future rapid scalability and internationalization, as well as to validate and launch our first functionality not based on honey analysis, but on bee’s health rapid, simple and affordable diagnose.
